Amanita pantherina (the panther cap) is one of the more striking and rarer species in the Amanita family. Visually distinct from Amanita muscaria — typically brown to grey-brown with bright white universal veil remnants — it has a long presence in European ethnomycology and natural history collections. It contains a higher concentration of muscimol and ibotenic acid than Amanita muscaria, making it one of the most potent species in its genus.

Whole caps are preferred by collectors and researchers as they preserve the natural structure, texture, and visual character of the specimen in its most unaltered form.
