Pine needle tea has a long history in traditional European and Northern herbal practice. Pinus sylvestris (Scots pine) needles contain naturally high concentrations of vitamin C — substantially more per gram than citrus fruit. They also contain vitamin A, chlorophyll, and antioxidant phenolic compounds including flavonoids.

Key nutrients and compounds:

• Vitamin C — present in high concentration in fresh and dried needles. Contributes to normal immune function and collagen synthesis.
• Vitamin A — present as precursor compounds. Contributes to normal vision and skin health.
• Chlorophyll — the primary pigment giving needles their green colour

How to prepare pine needle tea:

• Remove the brown papery sheath from the base of each needle bundle
• Roughly chop 1–2 tablespoons of dried needles per cup
• Pour hot (not boiling) water over the needles — boiling degrades vitamin C
• Steep for 5–10 minutes, then strain
• Add honey or lemon to taste
• Same needles can be steeped a second time for a milder brew

Other uses: Pine needles can also be used in herbal baths, as a flavouring in vinegars and syrups, or dried for aromatic purposes.
