Sea moss (Chondrus crispus), also known as Irish moss or carrageen, is a red algae that grows along the rocky Atlantic coastlines of Ireland, Iceland, and the eastern North American coast. It has been used as a food source and folk remedy in Ireland and the Caribbean for centuries.
Sea moss is naturally rich in iodine, which supports normal thyroid function. It also contains calcium, potassium, magnesium, and B-vitamins, making it a nutrient-dense addition to a varied diet.
Key nutrients:
- Iodine — naturally high in iodine, which contributes to normal thyroid function and metabolism
- Calcium & potassium — contributes to normal muscle function and electrolyte balance
- Vitamins A, C, E & K — antioxidant support and general nutritional contribution
- Carrageenan polysaccharides — the primary structural compound family of Chondrus crispus
How to use:
- Powder — mix 1–2 teaspoons into smoothies, juices, oatmeal, or soups
- Whole leaf — soak in cold water for 12–24 hours, then blend into a gel. Use the gel in recipes, drinks, or as a thickener
- Sea moss gel — store prepared gel in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks
Note: Sea moss is naturally high in iodine — avoid excessive consumption if you have thyroid conditions. Consult a healthcare professional if pregnant, nursing, or taking medication.
